If you meet a man and he tells you that he doesn’t (and hasn’t ever) cried at a movie, there are two distinct possibilities:
1. He’s full of lies and deceipt.
2. He has a cold black heart made of tar and death.
Â
These are the movies I can think of (at the moment) that will make me cry at some point or another:
- Life as a House
- De-Lovely
- Braveheart
- Dead Poets Society
- Schindler’s List
- Return of the King (Lord of the Rings)
- The Notebook
- Glory
I’ve read many other posts that mention Field of Dreams as a man-breaker, but it really doesn’t do it for me.
Please take a moment to post your list.

I fear my list would exceed the storage capacity available here. I’ll list a few that made the biggest impression. Granted, I cry with the excess of ANY emotion so “movies that make me cry” is not a very discriminating standard. These are movies that drove me to heaving sobs:
1. American History X
2. Dead Man Walking
3. Hotel Rwanda
4. The Last King of Scotland

I have the crying mechanism inside of me, but as far as movies go, I seem to strongly try to hold it in for some reason. So, when I say a movie “made me emotional,” that’s not code for “I cried.” That’s code for “there was a lump in my throat that I used all of my strength and night to push back down into my stomach so that it practically physically hurt…and I did this without any worthwhile reason.”
So…lots of movies make me emotional. Some of the standouts that come to mind…

*It’s a Wonderful Life
*Meet Joe Black
*The Notebook

Hmm. Perhaps a better question would be: what movies DON’T make me cry? I cried in The Lion King when Mufasa got trampled by the wildebeest, for goodness’ sake.
Films that made a huge mess of me:
The Painted Veil
The Return of the King (when Frodo leaves)
The Notebook (duh)
I’m with you on Hotel Rwanda, Em.
I made Justin watch Titanic with me for the first time a few nights ago. I thought I’d seen it enough times to be immune, but it wasn’t so. I still cried. Even with all that horrible, cheesy dialogue, I cried. (I still laughed when the dude jumps ship and hit the propeller though, so that’s got to count for something).

My all-time favorites that make me cry are:
~Hotel Rwanda
~Rocky, I know, its just nice to see hardwork actually win
~Rudy, Great triumph
~Two Towers, the first time I saw it I cried when at immensity of the attack on Helm’s deep
I put a big list on one of my blogs at http://www.squidoo.com/madecry which is also interactive so you can add your own movies and vote on them. It also includes music, books, and art. Great movies!
